The Croft Institute

Croft Institute Bar

This is a cool bar/club that is located in Melbourne, Australia. I haven’t personally been there, but would love the chance to go and take some photos there.
It’s located down an alley and is set up to look like a science/chemistry lab, with the ’scholarly’ theme continued in its three levels. For more info see Visit Victoria and Melbourne Pubs for a review.

Cool Watches

February 28th, 2006

model: Equalizer High Frequency
Some very cool watches are being made these days. Sure I do like the simple elegance and grace of classical timepieces. But who can really afford them and why not have a little funkiness? :D

There’s a lot of those thick wristed watches, from Fossil and sporty ones from various companies. Yet I still haven’t seen anything quite like what TokyoFlash Corp make.

It’s just too bad they make limited amounts of each model. Yet at the relatively cheap prices they’re sure to go fast!

And check out the watch cufflinks by Piaget (in the Men’s creative watches sections).

Cover Art

Book Covers as Art

Book Covers are getting much more colorful and arty. And like the old saying goes “don’t judge a book by its cover”, but it’s increasingly hard to do. As books are looking much more beautiful and I immediately think ‘wow must have some pretty cool stuff inside’. And it no longer seems that paperbacks are the second class option when buying books. Some of their more expensive hardcover counterparts are facing stiff competition with paperbacks sporting classy designs and matt, gloss effect finishes.

Check out the above site for some inspiring stuff.

Flickeur…my dreams come true

January 17th, 2006

flickeur - woman, lips, building flickeur - feather, sky

Flickeur is an amazing creation. It takes random photos off of Flickr and aranges them in a dreamy and sometimes bizarre way. When I say bizarre, I mean some of the transitions and and effects seem like they were made especially for the photos! It’s just like the description, the presentation can resemble a dream, a videoclip or something out of this world. It can become quite unnerving. Very surreal.

It does get a little repetitive even with different pictures blending in. I wish there were more options to customise it or at least offer even wilder transistions and more types of background music. Other than that you just have to watch it to truly experince it. If only there was some way of recording it hehe

Hysterical Lizard Fun

January 14th, 2006

Morning Musume vs LizardMorning Musume vs Lizard

Yes more crazy google video! This time it’s the girls from Morning Musume.
Oh no it’s a goanna (a type of lizard from Australia)!! Mahahahaha
This truly is some whacked out stuff that could only happen in Japan. The girls have a piece of meat attached to their foreheads. They pop their heads up through holes in a large compartment where the goanna is running around.
The screaming and and hysteria has to be seen and heard to be believed!
I was cracking up so much, although a few girls seemed to be oblivious and not the least bit scared.

Cutie Neko Dance Madness!!

January 12th, 2006

funky cat dancefunky cat dance

This is just weeeird. A little video clip of 3D rendered chibi girls with (im assuming) an english song in the background.
It’s a mix of Michael Jacksons ‘Thriller’, Japanese school girls, Anime and that unique Japanese feel :P
From what I can tell these neko (cat) girls appear from pods and start dancing. And I think the two human girls finally get transformed into dancing catgirls or something?? haha

Another video I found while on Google Video is the one with the Asian Backstreet Boys. Seems like this is well known on the web. They even showed it on CNN.

CCD Inventors Receive Award

January 6th, 2006

“In 1969 Willard S. Boyle and George E. Smith, while working at Bell Laboratories, designed the first Charge Coupled Device (CCD), a working version was produced just a year later. The CCD as we know has become the bedrock the digital imaging revolution including digital photography and video. They have just been honored with the Charles Stark Draper Prize which is presented by the National Academy of Engineering, this includes a $500,000 award.”

No more bootlegging with Digital Cinema?

January 4th, 2006

It’s interesting to know that movie studios in America embed all sorts of “invisible” information into reels of film. From forensic watermarking, high pitch sounds to extra frames. All this being undectable to the average human or moviegoer.

Unfortunately this hasn’t really done too much to stop bootlegging. Plenty of people still secretly record movies in cinema’s around the US. So now studios are hoping to use the new digital technologies to overcome this. With digital movies you can embed whatever information of the sreening (ie. time, place) with the projector.

“No matter how low-quality it may be, you can trace it back to the source…”

This would make it supposedly easier to track down popular cinemas of bootleggers. But the studios and people behind the technology are not saying much, relying on ignorance of their techniques for them to work.

Drugs Are Like That…

December 30th, 2005

Drugs are like LEGO! They suuuure are! This little film from 1979 reminded me of those education films that are frequently parodied on The Simpsons. But this one’s hip and trippy! Ok the story is, a girl and a boy talk about drugs while making lego. The girl talks about what some “lady” told her about drugs (we then fade out to different scenes where the “lady” narrates in the background). The aforementioned lady is Anita Bryant of US 60’s pop and TV jingle fame. She also became famous as an anti-gay spokeperson which finally led to the demise of her entertainment career.

Drugs Dream Sequence Her voice was rather ‘alluring’, hmm maybe I should put that as sounding gentle and relaxing haha. Though it was also the kind of condescending tone of voice you expect to receive a slap on the head after. Unfortunately the serious subject matter is glossed over and treated simplistically. The kids make analogies about drugs while buliding lego (the lego becomes part of an analogy too) with some really annoying dialogue. And Ms. Bryant keeps telling us in each analogy….”drugs are like that too!”

If anything kids were going to be confused by this well meaning but flawed film. It’s funny they use a corny hippie sounding song for the start and end. They also have weird camera angles and dream sequences of drugs floating down. The producer was surely smoking something. Right now I’m starting to think the kids were definately high on something with their inane conversations. Even the lego was smoking by the end! :D

And the moral of the story is, according to Anita…….”So, be careful turning corners.”
(she really says that!)

Oh and the hippie lyrics:

Once you start some things you just can’t stop,
Drugs are like that tooo.

You pick it up and it’s hard to drop,
Drugs are like that tooo.
(cue falling drugs)

Like a baby goin through a phase,
an like a player playing in a daze, yeah yeah
You break a rule and you have to pay.

It may not hurt but then again it may,
Drugs are like that too you know,
Drugs are like that too i know, know know….

Singin, drugs are like that
Drugs are like that
Drugs are like that
Drugs are like that
Drugs are like that tooooo(fade)

Surreal, absurd, kitschy and downright funny!

Leica Digital M

December 29th, 2005

Leica Digital M

“Much to the delight of many Leica aficionados there’s now more than a hint that Leica are readying a digital version of the M7 rangefinder camera. Stefan Daniel of Leica is quoted in the latest edition of LFI (Leica Fotografie International) magazine as saying “The Digital M will be introduced as a complete package that will include new wide-angle lenses.” The rumour mill also carries some specifications; 10 megapixels with a 1.3x crop factor, 2.5″ LCD monitor and SD storage. We expect to hear more at PMA in February.”

Bacteria Print Photo

December 14th, 2005

“Bacteria genetically engineered to respond to light have not only resulted an image ten times sharper than a high-resolution printer, but could help bring researchers one step closer to printing complex biological materials, such as spider silk or human skin for burn victims.”

Self sustaining EcosystemWhile browsing through ThinkGeek I found another amazing “gadget”. I think this is even more interesting than the ant farm. A self sustaining ecosystem! You’ll find two forms of active micro-organisms (bright red shrimp and algae) existing in a clear “soup” of filtered sea water. No need to feed or clean either, just give them light. Or instead of spending US$80-180 on one of these, you can get a ‘Paula Hayes Terrarium‘ for US$10,000. :/

Ant Farming in the 21st Centuary
All I can say is WOW! This makes having an ant farm way cooler! You can even get an LED base so your little farm “glows”. Ok the deal behind this is, supposedly the technology they used in a NASA 2003 mission for studying how animals fare in zero gravity led to this. The blue gel supplies the nutrients, so no need to feed the colony. Just add ants and watch em tunnel. I just wonder what you do with it all once they’re dead, and won’t they eat all the gel?

Pretty Mice

November 25th, 2005

Computer Mice

Cool looking mice…but that’s about it. Personally I’d like an update to mice to make them more comfortable to use. (Note to self; I should probably invest in a trackball or a soft plastic grip mouse).

But if they were a little cheaper I’d buy one, especially if you could customize your own! :D

Warning. Signs Ahead!

November 10th, 2005

Maze Swank Signs is very cool. Sure the laugh factor can vary but with so many people commenting your sure to find a funny statement. It’s basically a place for commenting on different signs from around the world. Whether they’re traffic, hazzard or otherwise.

The quote below goes with the sign here. I thought it was the funniest out of all the others.

This is the path an Abfahrt takes though your intestinal tract. Then it Gesperrts out.

The fun part is trying to make up the best description of what you think the sign “really says”.

Digital Lomography

November 4th, 2005

I’ve found an article which dissects the lomo effect and analyses exactly how the colour casts, contrast and just plain lomoness is produced. Thanks to Wolf Schweitzer for this interesting write up and of course not to forget he made some special Photoshop actions and image colour settings!

I haven’t tried these yet, but can’t wait to try them out and will update when I do. :D

Update: I’ve tried the actions on a number of photos. It never performs the same edit on any one photo. And it provides ways to distort photos for that authentic ‘cheap lens’ lomo look. It really gives photo’s a quality I hadn’t seen since the first lomo actions. Again you have to exeriment as it won’t make all your photo’s look great.

Water Drops

September 29th, 2005

Water Drop Sculpture
Here are some of the most amazing shots of water drops I’ve ever seen. With digital cameras it makes it so easy for anyone to try out techniques which would have tried anyones patience with just film.

There’s many unique examples which could never be duplicated again. For me that’s what makes it so special, the fact that each photo is a capture of time of a drop in motion. The colours and shapes are breathtaking! I couldn’t believe a drop’s faster than a second descent to the ground could be so interesting.

I NEED to go pee pee!

September 16th, 2005

pee pee memo

I think I MAY NEED A BATHROOM break. Is this possible? G.W.Bush

Well that’s what the memo said when Dubya sent a note to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice during a Security Council meeting at the 2005 World Summit and 60th General Assembly of the United Nations.

Isn’t it interesting the words he chose to capitalize? Must have been really busting for the loo. :D
I thought it might be a fake, but several news sources seem to confirm it’s authenticiy. And I mean come on Bush is human after all, he would need to go relieve himself. But it’s a funny piece of journalistic photography, shows a private moment of a public figure.

Okay, okay we shouldn’t be making too big a deal, as everyone one of us needs to go pee/poo.
