Democracy vs Despotism

‘Despotism’ treats the idea of nationhood differently than most other educational films. It sees nations not as static entities but dynamically, moving towards democracy or despotism as conditions change. This outlook doesn’t mesh well with old clichZs about patriotism and democracy, because it doesn’t necessarily see the American system as democracy’s highest achievement.”

This is an interesting film, I first thought it might be the usual 1950’s propaganda doumentary. But it turned out to be quite different and very relevant for our times. Please take a look, and if you want add your comments :)

“Far from being dated, this film is a gripping reminder that despotism can and does take hold in democratic systems, thus the onus is on the citizenry to recognize the trends which lead to its rise.
To respond to some other reviewers: each characteristic is presented as a scale — not at all a binary, black or white decision. Contrary to oversimplifying the ideas, the film succeeds in making the average person see the question of democracy vs. despotism in a much more complex, multidimensional light.” -user comments

(disclaimer: i hold nothing against American individuals nor the country in general)
On another note, today the world learnt about the death of Nick Berg.
The American was beheaded in a revenge killing by Al-Qaida’s leader in Iraq. What’s interesting is how many US politicians responded. White House spokesman Scott McClellan said, “This shows the true nature of the enemies of freedom…They have no regard for the lives of innocent men, women and children. We will pursue those responsible and bring them to justice.”

Hmm this coming from the country who treated its political prisoners in Iraq worse than dogs. Don’t get me wrong I think what happened to Nick Berg was terrible and should be condemned but the current US administration is so hypocritical and two faced when it comes to certain issues.

What about the true nature of the “proponents of freedom”, namely the US?
You could say America has no regard for innocent civilians either, as many Iraqis have died without cause. And what about all the other people who have died because America intervened and meddled in their respective countries.
Who will bring the US to justice?
