LOMO Effect in Photoshop

What follows below was originally on {http://www.redscreen.net/photolog/}
As the site seems down, I decided to post the info, as it might be of interest to others.
Please not that the images are presented at the size of 110×83 (from google) and not the original 300×226 as I did not get the chance to save them.
Visit kottke.org for example photos.
Also see this post regarding more advanced actions which subtly change certain parts of the picture, adds blur, noise and distortion.

I made some actions for all you fakelomo fans. There are 3 different ones, each give a little different flavor lomo, hope you like them. They should work on any picture, of any dimensions, though for pictures larger than 600×600 I recommend changing the feather amount accordingly. Here are some examples of the effects, original one first, then the 3 types:

Here are the actions
(NOTE: these actions are not the original ones but from www.blancha.com/blog)

In case you didn’t know, put them in …/Photoshop/Presets/Photoshop Actions/
Enjoy!

Here is the "old" tutorial, it is more size/shape sensative than the actions, so it may benefit you to download them anyway.

File: Open: the picture you want

Image: Adjustments: Brightness/Contrast: increase contrast by 20

Image: Adjustments: Hue/Saturation: increase saturation by 20

Choose the Rectangular Marquee Tool (your basic selection tool)

Change feather amount to 1/12 the width of your picture (if your picture is 600px wide, as all mine are, then you will set your feather to 50px.

Select your entire picture note: using select: all, will not work

Select: Inverse

Layer: New: Layer

Change your primary color to black. Fill the selection (on the new, blank layer).

Change the blend mode of this layer to Overlay

Layer: Duplicate Layer

Now select your base layer (the one with the picture on it).

Layer: New: Layer

Change your fill tool to Gradient

Change your Gradient Type to Spherical

Change your Gradient Shading Style to “foreground to transparent” (I believe this is the default).

Change your primary color to white.

With the fill tool selected, click in the middle of the picture, and drag the line out to the farthest edge of your picture (if it’s a portrait, use top or bottom, if landscape, use left or right).

Change the blend mode of this layer to Overlay

Change the Opacity of this layer to 80% (or whatever you see fit, you’ll see what I mean).

Now you are actually pretty much done. You can merge the layers together if you wish. I hope this was easy enough to understand. I may have made it much more difficult than it should be, but I don’t know enough about photoshop to make it any easier on myself. If anyone has any questions feel free to ask, I would be happy to help. I will try to make my actions available by the end of next week.

Thank you so much! I’ve been trying to find a site with instructions on how to do the lomo effect and most had the broken link.

  3. a gravatar Laura Roberts Says:

I tried to download the actions but when I try to load it I get an error message that says:

“Could not load action because and unexpected end-of-file was encountered.”

I’m not sure if something is wrong with the file, or if it just isn’t downloading completely (it didn’t even take it a second to download)

Is there any place else where I can find this or could it possibly be emailed to me. I’ve been going crazy looking for this. I would be so thankful! :)

  4. a gravatar Chris Says:

Thanks for posting the tutorials and the actions. Unfortunatly I am having the same problem as Laura. Anything you can do to help would be stellar.
    Thanks

    lomo-effect

  6. a gravatar Jeff Clark Says:

I got that warning too. I’m using Photoshop CS on XP.

  7. a gravatar Tony Says:

same warning as the others teddy. fix it!

note: instead of placing the actions in the given directory, users can simply load it using the actions panel.

If good ol theodore doesn’t fix the file, just make it yourself.
    1. in the actions panel, make a new set of actions
    2. press the record button (the circle one)
    3. follow the instructions to make the ‘lomo’ effect.
    4. when complete, press the stop button. and then save the actions.
    5. next time you need the actions, simply load it and then press play, and the affect will be applied.

    Edit:
Ok I found someone else with actions.
Or download off this site here.

Hi everyone. Do you know if this effect can be achieved using Corel Photo-Paint? And how? Thanks.

  21. a gravatar sarkastik Says:

Hi, yoly. I’ve never used Photopaint before so I’m not sure what features it has.
The simplest way to get the lomo effect in any basic photo editor is to increase contrast, increase saturation and darken the corners and edges.

That’s essentially what the above actions do in Photoshop. There are more complicated ways of distorting the image (using other actions, see the other lomo posts on this blog).

You can try the free editor The Gimp. Download the lomo script and follow instructions from flickr.

    Hope that helps :)
